You misfit of the carbon kin!
who scorn my dialect and skin
and shun my roof and table
who mock our common flesh and blood
and sacrifies our brotherhood
like Cain slaughtered Abel;
you hippocratic, sparkling guest
on Europe’s finger, neck and breast
come, hear my little fable!
When did you glow with honest love?
When did your flames caress the stove
and cauldron of the poorest
who shivered by some icy shack?
When did you warm the orphans back
to ease the cry that’s sorest
and keep your bonfire alive
to drive the demons from their hive
and run them to the forest?
Beloved brother! Sparkling gem
embedded in your diadem
of shallow, false pretences
who lights your fire of deadly lust
and murders innocence and trust
by raping Europe’s senses!
Oh brother, once beloved: Go!
and kindle your deceiving glow
far outside Eden’s fences”.
A diamond of a high carat
from somewhere round the Ararat
is paradise to view.
A lump of coal within the rock
sits humbly in its coal black frock
Just dirt, to me and you.
But coal and diamond are in short
two brothers of the carbon sort
So kindly hear me through:
The first time they could meet and talk
together on an evening walk
the lump of coal said” Brother!
How good it is to meet with you
for we are siblings fair and true
and copies of each other!”
But then the diamond, cold as ice
just turned away in full despise
and shouted “Holy mother!
That I should be compared with you
a heap of garbage through and through,
is more than I can handle.
You mock the Palace, in and out
by your revolting dirty coat.
You’re just a swagmans bundle
who’s gifts and talents are confined
to mingle with the simple kind
and light a stupid candle!”
The lump of coal replied: “ I know
that you reflect the radiant glow
on sumptuous evening dresses,
but though you’re born to warmth and light
and beauty and to stunning might
no other rock possesses:
How cold and arrogant’s your brag !
